Today I woke up with a rather interesting and weird idea of coming up with a technology benchmark/standard for applications developed in Africa. It isn't a totally new idea and I'm sure somebody somewhere has thought of it before. A large number of applications on the internet are from western countries and Africa is yet to stand out and be counted as a region of technology innovation though slowly we are moving there we are yet to get noticed for any of the applications we build, the stockskenya.com's and jahazis of this continent need to wear proudly the fact that they stem from a continent that was previously called "the dark continent".

The purpose of Proudly African would be:

  1. To highlight monumental and quality technological innovations that come from this continent.
  2. A mark of recognition from peers and the community on technology developed locally.
  3. To market Africa as a technologically innovative continent.

An innovative application developed in Africa can be branded with the logo (yet to be designed).I'd like to start first by showcasing web applications developed in Africa, peers can then review these applications and build a discussion around them, outstanding applications can then be recognised in an annual event (still to be decided on what form of recognition is to be done).

I'm sure there is so much more it can be but I'm yet to go into detail. I do welcome my fellow technology enthusiasts to share their ideas on this lest I sound like a mad man :-)
